For the mom whose really into word games, but doesn’t have a lot of time to look for games to play, here are some fun games you can play on your smart phone and with your kids.
Video games require moms to invest a good amount of time, which some (like myself) do. But if mom is on the spectrum of having free time, she will typically call for games that are accessible and keeps her on her toes. Internet based word games such as: Word Search, Scrabble, and Word Scramble are a not only easy and educational but brilliant for moms who are looking for that brief relief. These games can be played on smartphones, iOS devices, and PC desktops as well as laptops on your own time and at your own pace.
Word search puzzles are always a good time on paper but Word Search the game is more exciting when mom can play online. Online features include: quick and easy click-drag to mark your word, a larger archive of puzzles with a variety of categories, and a timer. On the plus side, moms can create their own puzzles for their kids, or work on the word search as an activity to pass the time and learn words together with them. You can visit many websites but each will offer a different set of options for game play. Two player versions for online play do exist but it’s hard to find and for a mom to play with someone else on her alone time, may sometimes take away from the fact that she is playing at her own pace. I recommend word-searches.org because it doesn’t require plug in software.
An online word game that moms can definitely play with friends as well as on her own time is Words with Friends on facebook. This is a version of scrabble played online between you and the computer, or you and a facebook friend. The features of this game can be interpreted with pros or cons as Words with Friends does not require you and your friend to play at the same time. Player 1 can find a word with random letters and submit it to Player 2 and await his/her rebuttal once he/she logs onto facebook. This allows you to go at your own pace, but a possible downside is that you have to wait on player 2, who can also go at his/her own pace. However, mom can begin a game with other friends at the same time, since the game requires her to wait on player 2. This game is perfect for the mom on the go.
When mom picks up a newspaper she will probably see a word scramble section if she peruses down the funnies, similar to word search because this game was originally played on paper. A perk for mom is that she doesn’t have to wait for the next newspaper to find out if she got the answers right. For Word Scramble the instructions are simple: unscramble the word by clicking and dragging each letter to its correct position or click on a letter and then click the position where it should go. My favorite site for Word Scramble is yourdictionary.com because of the marine theme and there’s also a timer, so the pressure is on. Word Scramble requires having heard of the word before and with countless numbers of words in the English dictionary, the odds are definitely a challenge. However, in this game mom is always a winner because if she loses, knowledge is gained in learning a new word every time.
Mom plays online word games to pass the time while she enjoys herself. Additionally, kids at the reading level can play along; this creates bonding and a learning experience for both parties. So moms, if you haven’t played and are looking for a good time while your kids are asleep or even a challenge in doing something different when you have some downtime, play the online word games. Go on facebook, playstore, or the Smartphone market; these games are free, educational, and right at your fingertips.
